From the Vault: "Delirium" and a SNEAK PEEK at a New Novel!

Several months ago, a childhood friend of mine sent me a message containing a blast from the past: a story we'd started as Sophomores in high school, but hadn't finished! Myself, my friend, and our younger sisters had decided to have a story competition, each collaborating to write a work of fiction to later be read and judged by a couple of friends. We never did finish our stories, and I'd almost completely forgotten about them until now.

It's always fun for me to read my old writing to see how I've progressed over the years, and my friend was impressed by the work we'd put together. So, I thought I'd share our little throwback with you all alongside a snippet of more current writing. Both excerpts are more or less unedited, and are being shared as-is.

Synopsis of Delirium: Savanna Choi remembers having night terrors as a kid. They’d interfered with her sleep. They’d messed up her social life. Eventually, they went away, and she went on living life as a normal child. At the start of Sophomore year, however, things take a turn for the worst. The night terrors come back. Haunting, frightening, eerie nightmares with disturbing images result in a constantly preoccupied, paranoid Savanna who begins having trouble distinguishing the difference between her dreams and reality…

We only finished through the middle of the 3rd chapter of this work, so the excerpt is rather short (about 10 pages).

Synopsis of The Lullaby of Luci: The first thing Luli Mathis realizes as she sets foot onto Argentine soil is that she's it--seemingly the only Black woman around in a sea of unfamiliar faces in one of the largest South American cities, unsurprisingly the only one who can make a connection with a young man named Gaby Otero, and probably the only one who can push 6 year old Gaby Vidal to speak. Initially, it's amusing. Then, annoying. Then, alarming. And as more and more time passes, Luli sees that being it brings about some dark and insidious consequences she neither wanted nor prepared for..

This is intended to be a short thriller novel to be released by the end of 2017. To keep you all wanting more, I'm only sharing a portion of the first chapter of the story (2 pages).

Give both a read, and comment what you think! In what areas do you see the most growth?

All the best,

Reina M
