Purity

Eyelids that flutter open to pure darkness,

Hands that reach up and wipe sticky sweat from a moist forehead.

Heart that beats faster than life itself.

Faster, faster, still.

Why?

You wonder, but only the darkness and

The quick beats respond.

Their answer is unsatisfactory.

The time does not matter, as this isn't

The first time.

The time before, it wasn't a wet forehead,

But rather, wet cheeks and moist eyes that were

Wiped dry, yet not wiped clean.

Eyes that cannot forget what's past,

Cheeks that still flush at the memories.

Pure horror that refuses to leave and returns in the form of

Dreams.

One time,

Two times,

Three times before the sun peeks through the

Bare trees, and the alarm rings to signal the start of a

New day.

One time,

Two times,

Three times those eyelids must rest before

You realize that your work will be on hold

Until your dreams no longer wake you

One time,

Two times,

Three times in the night.

Pure exhaustion wears you down,

Stretches you thin,

Floods your eyes with tears,

Your mind with never ending thoughts,

Your nights with endless dreams,

Both good and bad.

Neither lasting the whole night through.

Pure exhaustion wears you thin,

Pushes you down,

Until your days are a haze,

Your nights are a blur,

And you wish to Whomever reigns over your soul

One time,

Two times,

Three times,

For just a moment of

Pure peace, the purity you've yet to know.
